great car seat for keeping kids harnessed longer

I found this car seat while searching for something reasonably priced that would harness past 40 pounds. I bought a different seat first, but while it claimed to harness to 50# and 47", my 37 pound 2 year old was already too tall for it. I returned it and purchased the Nautilus. We are using the harness straps in the second hole down, so he still has a good deal of room to grow in this seat. The straps are extremely easy to adjust and installation was no problem. I use the vehicle seatbelts rather than LATCH. The arm rests are very sturdy. The cup holder is in a good location. I plan to keep him harnessed in this seat for hopefully 2 more years, or until he becomes too tall, and then continue to use this seat as a belt positioning booster. The headrest is very easy to adjust and is able to raise quite high. This seat can accomodate a 20# child, but it's much better to use a convertible seat and keep the child rear facing to 35#.
We bought Two!

I too am wondering why the price is so expensive on here, compared to Walmart (where we bought ours). The only thing I can think of is that this carseat is so high in demand, and sold out at many places, that they are selling it from a company with a really high price. I would definately wait until the price goes down to get this seat. That said, this carseat is absolutely the best one yet. I origally wanted to buy one for my three year old nephew (who I care for) because his seat was getting outdated. Instead, I ended up buying two of these, one for him and one for his 5 year old sister. She was already in a plain booster seat, but I decided to buy this so she can be in a harness longer. Now, she should fit with the harness until she is at least 7, which is a whole lot safer. She actually doesn't mind being back in a carseat, because this seat is so cool, with it's cup holder and two "secret treasure holders." I also love the buckle (which I can open with one hand) compared to my nephew's old system. It is also easier for my neice to buckle the harness then to buckle herself into her booster seat using the car seat belt. So much faster! Another bonus, this carseat is also safe for one year olds on up. I do home daycare and occasionally have different kids using the seats. This carseat has straps that are the absolute easiest to adjust. It litterally takes seconds. I origally thought the price of $150 was high (and that was when I was planning on buying just one!), but it truly is the last carseat you will need to buy. It is a fantasic carseat and soo worth the price. There are probably more expensive carseats that aren't as nice. And for the added piece of mind of having them in a harness longer, priceless.
better than radian or britax in my humble opinion

So I did a LOT of reseach before buying this, read multiple message boards, then to the store to look at them, etc. This replaced a britax that was passed down to DD #2 for my rather large 4 yo girl(40lbs, 40inches)I want to keep her harnessed for as long as I can. I finally decided to go for it b/c of
1)price (though it really wasn't an object) but I am a big fan of bang for your buck,
2)sturdiness, i was never a fan of graco until i bought this seat. It's got a nice weight, sturdy frame.
3)comfort, memory foam! DD loves it, she sleeps very comfortably in it without slumping over like she used to.
4)size, not gigantic like the regent but large it enough to have a big kid sit in it
I was concerned about its looks but it's much better looking in person.
Finally, who can beat amazon's price!
I highly recommend it, I think it will last my DD until she's prob 7-8 yo (My average sized 8yo nephew fits!)

This car seat is very well designed.
1. Good for tall kids.
2. The straps are on rollers, so that they are easy to tighten.
3. Straps are easy to tighten because of a loop design at the end.
4. The release buckle is easy to undo (Might be a con for some)
5. Cup holder on one side and storage compartment on the other side.
6. Very comfortable.
7. Not too big and not too heavy.
8. Nice click sound to make sure the straps have latched.
The only negative so far:
1. The straps tend to get twisted about 1 in 10 times.

I bought this seat two weeks ago for my six-year-old and we both love it. She's pretty close to 40 pounds and was about to outgrow her current seat. I'd like her harnessed a little longer in one of our vehicles that has "backseat issues". I was thrilled when this seat came out. I really like Graco products and since this was more of a want than a need, I couldn't justify $300 for some of the other higher-weight-harnessing seats.
Putting it together was a little weird. It was difficult to pop the arm rests in. It's supposed to make a click, but it was a very quiet sound. They must be in right, though, because she puts her weight on them getting in and out and they haven't wiggled.
The strap adjuster took some time to get used to. It has a shield over the release so a child can't loosen the straps. But this also means you can't see it, so you have to feel around for it.
The cupholder is great. It actually holds a real bottle of water rather than just a sippy cup. Big kids use water bottles!
I've installed it in my Camry with the lap/shoulder seatbelt and it went in like a dream. It will eventually be in the Jeep Cherokee. Although I haven't tried it in there, I don't anticipate any problems.
The headrest sticks when you raise and lower it, but it should loosen up and that won't need to be done all that often, anyway.
Be sure to pay attention to the specifics. Children must be one year old and weigh 20 pounds (both, not either/or) to use this seat and it's forward-facing only. Even though you can use it at 20 pounds, I'd recommend leaving your child rear-facing until 30-35 pounds (depending on the seat) in a convertible seat. Not only will your child be much safer, you'll get more use out of the Nautilus. Since the Nautilus expires after six years, if you get it for your one-year-old it'll expire when he's seven and you'll still need another booster. If you get it when he's two or three, it'll expire when he's eight or nine and can go straight into a seatbelt.

I bought this car seat after alot of research. I have a 3 year old little boy who has pretty low muscle tone. I was looking at getting him a 300.00 car seat just to keep him in a 5 pt harness for longer because he doesnt have the tone to be in a lap belted booster yet.
This seat is a great seat for him at a great price! It is easy to use, but yet the straps are hard enough to get off that the kid can not do it himself (what we were battling with our old seat) I plan on getting a second seat when my 6 month old is 1 year and 20 lbs.

I own this seat, a Regent, a Roundabout & a Marathon for my 2 kids. My son is 2 1/2 & is currently using the Regent in my husband's car & this in mine.
This seat is a great fit in my car, which is a mid-size sedan. The Regent just wouldn't have fit, so this was an excellent choice for us. It installed fairly easily & we were able to get a very solid install. My parents actually purchased one for their car as well since they watch my son once a week and they love the seat too.
Overall, I would absolutely purchase this seat again.

We had to buy this car seat even though I really wanted the Britax Frontier. I had a Britax Roundabout before this and really, really liked it. We actually did by the Frontier, but try as we might, we just couldn't get it to fit in my Honda Civic. The seat kept sliding within the seat belt even though it was tight as can be. Reluctantly, we had to look for something else. We ended up with the Nautilus.
br /
br /The Nautilus is good, but doesn't have some of the conveniences of the Britax Roundabout. For example, the Roundabout has handy velcro on the seat belt and on the edge of the seat so that you can attach the belt to the seat so that the child doesn't end up sitting on the belt when he/she gets in. On the Nautilus, my child has hurt her back when sitting on the plastic clip. I might see about creating my own velcro for it. It's definitely convenient.
br /
br /Another thing with the Nautilus is that my child's head flops forward when she falls asleep, even if the seat is in the recline position. This never happened with the Roundabout.
br /
br /And the last thing is that I've noticed the fabric on the Nautilus just isn't as good as on the Roudabout. I already see evidence of wear on the seat and we've only had it about 4 months. We had the Roundabout for three years and still looks great. Not sure I'll be able to say the same about the Nautilus in 3 years. Plus it seems the fabric is also hotter and not as comfortable as the Roundabout. Britax just makes a really good product. Unfortunately, we just couldn't use it.
br /
br /Overall, the Nautilus is good. And I certainly can't complain about the price. But if you can spend a little more, buy the Frontier because you'll have it a long time. Hopefully, you won't run into the same installation problems that we did. However, if money is tight, then you'll do fine with a Nautilus.

We LOVE this car seat! Easy to install and great-looking too!
br /Our 16 months old son is so thrilled to be out of his infant seat and into this.
br /It's incredibly well-made and comfy for your little one. The cup-holder is a bonus (just need to use the taller cups for this). Easy to get him in and out of too. 5-point harness is a must (and this has it) and we will be able to use this for a few years. And most important it meets all safety requirements! We will soon be purchasing a second seat and will get another Nautilus.

We bought this seat for our almost 3 year old at the time. I did my research and saw it got wonderful reviews. I loved the 5 point harness to 65 lbs plus the booster until 100 lbs. The price was also nice. Not long after we bought this seat, we slid on back ice and totalled our one year old truck. My daughter walked away with only seat belt burns. After the accident the seat was still secured very tight in the truck. Now that insurance finaly reimbursed us for the seat, we are buying the same one!!

I bought this carseat at the recommendation of a friend who loves hers. It installed perfectly and securely - there was no assembly required, other than just adjustments for my child's size. It is sturdy, not oversized, easy to click and unclick, comfortable for my son (we immediately took a 10 hour trip after installing it and he was comfortable the whole time and even able to sleep). He also loves the cupholder! I have already suggested it to several friends. AND we won't have to buy ANOTHER carseat for as long as he has to be in one!

I purchased this seat for my son, who at the time was 13 months old. He had outgrown the seat that he was in and it was time for a new one. I had heard so many wonderful things about this seat so I decided to get it. He has now been in the seat for about 4 months old it is great. He LOVES the seat and so do I! It is a little on the large side which makes it impossible to fit more than 2 seats in my car, but it's ok, I still love it and I only have 1 child so it's no big deal. I would recommend this seat to anyone who asked about it!

I love this carseat- my daughter is only 2 (on the smaller side) and she fits in it well... and it will last forever! I will be buying one for my next daughter when she is old enough.
br /Only cons- hard to clean (to take off the cover for the carseat), and the straps twist easily... Also the button has sometimes not come undone when I am trying to get her out of the carseat- normally fine once I try a couple times...

My son is 13 months, very tall little dude. This seat works great for him. no pinching or discomfort...even on the smallest settings. Very well made (sturdy frame, soft/sporty looking material, easy harness)and a reasonable price. I saw it in stores for $50-150.00 higher than I bought it for! If you're familiar with Graco infant seats, than this one will be easy to use. Can be moved from one vehicle to the next with ease(I use the latch system in my Camry hybrid). The recline is just enough for my sons head not to roll forward. Cup holders and storage are nice as well.
br /
br /The only drawback so far is the reassembly after cleaning. It takes a while the first time (about an hour). This should be easier now that I know how.

We got this seat for our four year old because he is over 40 lbs and we wanted to extend the time that he is in a 5-point harness. We have been using the seat for about a month and for the most part I like it. The straps adjust easily and it seems to be comfortable for him. My biggest complaint is that the bottom strap with the buckle on it always falls backward and it is tough to get it out from under him after he has sat down in his seat.
br /Otherwise it's a good product and easy to use.

The price on Amazon was $30 cheaper than other retailers. Chair looks great, but the belt at the crotch is set rather close to the seat back and makes it tough to fasten. Also concerned about the use of styrofoam in the head rest. Overall satisfied with the product, especially the versatility that will allow it to be used for years to come as the children grow.

Like most all the others who have reviewed this seat, I searched extensively on the net and in the stores to find a seat with a five point harness that would hold a slightly larger child. This is for my 3 year old, who is 41" tall and weighs about 37 pounds.
br /
br /The seat seems comfortable and sturdy. It was simple to install and looks pretty good in the car. My son loves the cupholder (don't they all) and the storage cubby in the arms. He sleeps well in the car and does seem to have good head support while doing so. Overall I am very satisfied with the seat and think it will be a good purchase in the long run. (We have a younger one to pass it to when this one outgrows it)
br /
br /I do have one major problem with the seat, and I have already contacted the Graco company about it, but they say there is really nothing they can do. Like others have said, the 5 point harness is a little harder to open and close than other seats I have used. My son can buckle himself in, but he can not get the buckles un-done, so that is a good thing. He can however put his little thumb in the hole and loosen the straps. I am not sure if this is a result of him being tall and having longer arms, or if the release hole is just closer to him in this seat. We went on a 4 hour trip last weekend and we buckled him in and pulled the straps snug, and when we had been on the interstate for about an hour, noticed that he was moving around alot. We stopped to check it out, and he had loosened the straps, until they were just hanging down around him. If we had been in an accident, he would have had no protection at all. Soooo, this is a problem that we will have to address, or get something else. Hopefully we can convince him not to do such a thing.
br /
br /Again, overall I think this is a wonderful seat and I like the fact that it is made to hold larger older children. I would recommend it.

Soooo, this is a problem that we will have to address, or get something else. Hopefully we can convince him not to do such a thing.

br /Again, overall I think this is a wonderful seat and I like the fact that it is made to hold larger older children. I would recommend it.

We bought this as a second car seat, our son has a Britax Marathon in my car, and the Graco Nautilus in dad's car. I would have bought a second Britax, except we were looking for something a bit cheaper. This Graco has proven to be an excellent choice, it was reasonably priced, easy to assemble and install and easy to use. My son loves it, and really likes the cupholder.

This car seat is great. I like the head support on each side and the cup holder in reach of our two year old. It seems very comfortable and well padded in all the right places. My only complaint...the buckle is slightly difficult to unlatch. However, this could be a good thing...our child hasn't figured it out yet! Great seat!

We placed the car seat in our sports car with bucket seats and it works fine. We had to adjust the base a little to fit, but it works great. It is easy to buckle in our 14 mo son and adjust the straps. It must be comfortable because he always falls asleep while riding in it. We have a Britax too, and I like them both, but this one is much cheaper. It is a great deal for the money, especially if you're on a budget or need more than one car seat. I would recommend this car seat to my friends and family.

i bought this a couple of months ago and my kids love it. I had it in the family room for a couple of days before we put it in the car and my 2.5 and one year old were fighting over just sitting in it. It is very comfortable and solid. We went the cheap route with our other car seat and it tips when we make a sharp turn. This is a zillion times better- I think it is worth every penny.

We purchased this seat(actually 2) for my son who is soon to be 3. We have a 5 month old, so we were needing to transition car seats soon. This seat is nice and roomy, good little storage places for cups and a few small toys within reach. My son loves it. Over Thanksgiving, we made a 7 1/2 hour trip with the kids, and when my son fell asleep, his head did not fall forward like it has in other seats. It is also great because it can be used with seatbelts and then later when he gets older, to a backless booster. I recomend this seat, we are very happy with it.

This was the car seat we bought after the car carrier. It was the first seat where my son was able to sit facing forward. We put him in it and he was so excited. He loves it. If we put a drink in his cup holder he gets it out almost immediately. He thinks he's such a big kid sitting in there.

I boought this booster car seat for my 2.5 years old daughter after extensive search and comparison. Overall, I like this product and my daugther too, particularly the cupholder and storages under the armrest. The two areas I would like to see some improvements are the recline design and the headrest. The 3-position recline design is not really a true recline. It doesn't change the angle between lags and back. It is just like one putting a bath towel under the seat. This is my main complaint. As for the headrest, when my daughter sleeps, her head keeps falling down forward, rather than resting on the headrest or the back of the seat. This is probably related to the recline function since there is no way to tilt the angle of the headrest. For me, it would be a perfect product if Graco could resolve the two concerns.

5 STARS is not enough to rate this one. I'm a mother of 2 girls under 4, so we had to buy 2 so they would match. :) We originally purchased Eddie Bauer car seats for our first daughter, and this one is by far WAAAY BETTER! These carseats are SUPERIOR in many ways: cushion, materials used, safety/comfort features. It has 3 reclining positions! The head rest grows with your child and wraps around enough for them to rest their head when they fall asleep. It fits like a cockpit, they look snug and feel much safer in these car seats. My oldest can't unbuckle the 5-point harness anymore! She loves the fact that the straps have cushiony wraps around them, and the buckle on the crotch has a protective cover for their groin area. Read the instruction manual, it's in plain language, with clear instructions and pictures, it even has a separate manual in spanish. I can't believe what a good deal we got, we won't have to buy another car seat since it converts to a booster seat, safe for up to 100 lbs. I highly recommend this carseat! Thanks Graco!!!!

I just bought this for my 3 year old boy who out weighs the limits on his old 5-point harness car seat but is still not mature enough (plus I don't feel comfortable with it) to be using a booster with the car seat belt. I ordered it from Amazon and it took less than a week to arrive.
br /
br /My son loves it and so do I. This car seat has a weight limit of 65 pounds for using the harness when almost all other car seat have a limit of 40 pounds. So he will be able to use the harness for a long time and that makes me happy.

br /
br /Pros:
br /
br /*The extended harness use (I feel is most important)
br /
br /*The price
br /
br /*The sturdiness of it
br /
br /*Was very easy to install!
br /
br /*My son loves the built in cup holder and storage compartments
br /
br /*The straps are very easy to adjust (I mean when you pull the bottom strap to make the harness tighter)
br /
br /*The buckle is really easy for me to un-buckle, but he cant do it because of the angle, which is a good thing
br /
br /*It's the only car seat I will ever need
br /
br /*Adjustable head rest (adjust according to height)
br /
br /Also, on Amazon a *few* people said their kids couldn't sleep in the seat well but my kid, who NEVER sleeps in the car, has fallen a sleep in it three out of the five times he has rode in it so far.
br /
br /
br /
br /
br /Cons:
br /
br /*The arm rest do get in the way when I am lifting him in and out but mostly just because he is a BIG kid and I have a tall SUV. If he was lighter and the car was lower it would be easier. But either way I see it as a small price to pay!

br /*I always have to fish out the buckle strap from under his butt, and again it's a small price to pay!

This car seat is very nicely designed. It is quite heavy compared to similar-sized car seats which is a disadvantage when traveling frequently by plane.
br /
br /The materials are relatively plush and my 2-year-old seems to be very comfortable sitting in it. The cup holder is very convenient and in a much better spot that other car seats of the past.
br /
br /The safety system designed to secure the seat to the car is very easy to use and seemingly very secure.
br /
br /Probably the biggest complaint from my family is the three-point harness. The shoulder straps that plug into the harness are a bit difficult to seat, but sometimes impossible to remove. Standing in a cold parking lot struggling with the latch is not ideal.

I purchased this after my 5 year old reached 40 lbs and grew out of his last car seat. I like that when he gets a little bigger (which won't take long) I can convert this into a booster. This seat was reccomended to me by the Car Seat Safety Check Point person at my local hospital. I had my car seats checked when my son was still in his old one, and she told be about this one as a good next purchase. I am happy with the purchase.

We bought this seat last week and we are happy with it. Couple if things i want to share:
br /1. Good safety metal frame, very comfortable for long drives
br /2. Though the seat has recliner, it doesn't recline alot.
br /3. It occupies a bit of more space in Camry. So if you want to accmodate 2adutls and this car seat in rear seat of your sedan, you have to think. We positioned the car set in center and my wife sits next to him after moving the seat a bit to other side.
br /
br /Overall we liked this a lot. I got the best deal in amazon @122

Poor second child's hand-me-down car seat expired, but he was still such a peanut that he will be in a five point harness for a while. We looked at getting a less expensive replacement convertible car seat and then a booster in a few years for him, but he didn't like any of the less expensive car seats - the only ones he was comfortable in were more expensive. So, I didn't buy anything at the store and went home to stew a while and decide what to do. I decided that *I* liked this one the best in the store, even though he didn't *love* it like he did some of the others. I AM SO GLAD I BOUGHT THIS ONE!! He is really comfortable in it, and he loves having the little cubbies and the cupholder for his cars and stuff he likes to carry along with us. We took it on a 10+ hour trip and he was great in it. Sleeping in it is not the greatest, but he doesn't sleep that much in it. The wings are deep enough to give his head enough support that it doesn't look scary for him to fall asleep in it. I have raved about this seat to others and would whole-heartedly recommend it to anyone with an older toddler/preschooler who needs a five-point harness and then a booster.

This product is perfect for a growing child. We bought it originally for my 3 year old son who out grew every car seat we have. I loved it so much we bought another one. After the holidays we are replacing the other two we have for my 1 year old daughter. I even bragged so much about it to my friends they bought it as well. I'm happy my son and daughter will both be able to be in a 5-point harness for a long time.

After shopping around and testing different car seats, this was the hands down winner. It's made well, looks good and is priced fair. We have two of them and have been using them for a few months with no complaints. All the Graco products (stroller, car seats) that we've had have been good.

I spent a lot of time looking for car seats for my daughter and found this one. It was reasonably priced and considering that it lasts a while in different stages it is definately worth the price. My daughter really likes it better then the last one. It was a little tougher to secure in the car then the rear facing one but thats about it.

My son is five years old, 45 pounds, 47 inches tall, and we were set to purchase a much more expensive seat for him as he was getting too tall for his Britax Boulevard. However, on the enthusiastic recommendation of my sister-in-law and another friend we purchased the Graco Nautilus and have been very happy with it. It has a quality feel to it with all the features of more expensive models. Not only was it half of what we thought we'd be spending, it was really easy to assemble and use and my son loves the cup holder and the "hidden" pocket/receptacles on either side of the seat. He loves to take his socks and shoes off in the car and now he stashes his socks in the pockets so we don't have to look all over for them.

This is a great car seat. I plan to keep my daughters harnessed until they fight me tooth and nail about it, and this car seat will allow me to do so. I currently have my 2 1/2 year old in this seat and my 10 month old will probably switch from her SafeSeat to this at around 15 months.
br /
br /As for the recline, there is a reason it does not lean back like an easy chair: safety. You and your children are safer sitting upright than leaning too far back. My daughter can undo the chest clip, but not the lower and she is learning that she should not undo it.
br /
br /I would have loved to have bought a Britax because they have prettier patterns, but what really makes a car seat? This seat is well made and I believe it will last the entire 5 years it is recommended that you keep a car seat. By that time my oldest will be 7 and my youngest will be 6 before hers expires.

We are extremely pleased with the Graco Nautilus. My sons first convertible car seat was a Britax Marathon, which we loved. When we were looking for a second convertible seat, I didn't want to spend as much, or we would have purchased a second Marathon. The Graco Nautilus has a good weight and height range, which we need for our son, and it's a great price. It was easy to put together and install into the car. We are using it as the primary car seat, rather than the secondary for two reasons: my son loves the cup holder, and we love how easy it is to get our son strapped into it. I highly recommend this car seat!

I really love this seat! It is a heavy, but totaly worth it! It is really great when my son goes to sleep; his head doesn't flop around! He really loves the built in cup holder. He is a really small 4 and he thinks this is a great big boy seat because it has the seat belt slots like his other booster. Our state recently changed the law and they have to be in a 5 point seat until they are 40 lbs. At the rate we are going he will be 6 before he gets there! This is a great solution! The straps are great... No twisting!

This is our second Graco Nautilus. We bought our first one when they first came out due to the features and versatility. This one is for our other car so that we have one in each, and the price is $20 less than we paid the first time. For those of you like myself who contemplated between this, Britax, and Sunshine Kids, this wins for me. I tried all 3. The Britax sits way too high in the car and my son's head practilcally hit the ceiling of the vehicle - probably not good in a roll over situation. The Sunshine Kids Radian did not fit properly, worked itself loose, and sat too upright for comfort. I went back to the old car seat until something better was available. Finally, Graco released this car seat, and it has all the features of the before mentioned seats, plus over $100 cheaper than the Britax, and $50 less than the Radian. Metal frame construction, side impact absorbing foam, adjustable headrest, and a cup holder. The features, price, comfort make this a winner. We recently drove a cross country road trip and my son had no comfort issues and slept most of the way. Our vehicles are a Dodge Durango and Pontiac G6.

We purchased this seat for our 3 year old based on the excellent product reviews and a friend's positive experience with the seat. We used the Britax Marathon for the past 2 years. We loved the Marathon and considered getting a second (her little brother was moving into it), but knew that she would enjoy "big kid" features like cup holders and arm rests.
br /
br /In short, we had a miserable 5-hour car trip that resulted in much fussing and zero sleep for her -- something we hadn't experienced with our Britax seat. I think the problem was twofold. First, the seat is incredibly upright, even if you use the modest "tilt" feature. Second, the seat has awful padding. If you're just driving around town, it's probably adequate. If you do long treks to Grandma's like we do, this seat just doesn't cut it. The back pad has a huge seam across the center (underneath the top cosmetic flap) which has to be uncomfortable over a long haul. We ended up returning the seat and buying a Britax Frontier. The most recent trek to Grandma's went wonderfully. Padding in the Frontier was much better, the sightlines are much more open for looking out the windows, and the recline position is more natural. If you're accustomed to Britax quality, the Graco seat will likely disappoint. If you need it for short jaunts this is probably a good value.

Graco Nautilus 3-in-1 Car Seat in Matrix
br /
br /Just bought Graco Nautilus, diappointed. I have a older car that doesn't have the latch system. The shoulder belt is unable to be tightened correctly, so the car seat moves back and forth as the car moves. Also, when my 3 year old fell asleep his head had zero support and just hung forward, even in the "recline" position of the seat. We had a Brittax round about prior to purchasing the Graco Nautilis. Now, we need to buy another car seat. We are looking at the Brittax Regent or Brittax Frontier.
