We did not originally buy an extra base thinking that we would just transfer the base from car to car. Well, once you get the base in - it is snug and you don't want to move it. It took a little while to get the base in as tight and secure as I wanted, but once it was in it doesn't move.
br /Strongly recommend getting one for each car!

br /Only con - I wish the bases worked with all Maxi Cosi car seats... we are going to have to get another extra base for the toddler car seat!
